14 Year Olds Bust Ribena

Something I plan to write about in one of my upcoming constructs is the "Decentralization" of power.

It's happening right now everywhere you turn and manifesting in unusual ways.

The power of the Internet is taking the power of information out of the hands of mass media and into the hands of those who manage to be relevant and "buzzworthy."

Military power is less and less defined by "superior" technology and more and more by one's ability to leverage guerrilla tactics and the information war (just ask the US and Israel).

The balance of power has certainly not yet made a complete shift (yet), but the evidence of this trend pops up in the oddest places.

Take for example the case of two 14 year olds from Auckland New Zealand who busted the 2nd largest food and drug manufacturer in the world (GlaxoSmithKline) for deceiving the public about the amount of Vitamin C in Ribena.

Turns out there wasn't any - oops.

When two 14 year olds armed with a chemistry set and an Internet connection can call out GSK for deceptive advertising - and make it stick - it seems the era of mass media control is on the wane.

But then, looking at what makes the news (Anna Nichole) and what doesn't (full details about Darfur), we still have a long way to go.
