NOShow?

I've "appeared" on TV and radio hundreds of times, but what do I say now?

"I appeared on the Internet?"

Well, I've been "appearing" on the Internet since 1994.

But somehow my appearance on this net-only reality show is different.

How do you know when you're involved in something interesting?

Who knows.  But I think having to make up new language for the experience is a good indicator.

Go check it out, give me your opinion, and tell me how people should talk about this new medium.

What will they be called?  NOShows?  (for "net only")

(Oh, and I'll be contacting the brave blog volunteers shortly ...)

Hi Mark,
What about Ishows (internet)?
Lucia

Posted by: Lucia at August 19, 2007 2:21 AM

Man, you are brilliant. That is one great idea... the only thing I will say is it will be of interest to so many people, but right now, only those in "our" world will know about it... how do we get involved to help you tell people about it?

Hi Mark , THIS IS AWESOME , IF I HAD TO FIND A NAME IT WOULD BE , "SIMPLE VIEWS' BECAUSE THERE IS NO LOOKING FOR IT RIGHT THERE ONE CLICK.
HOPE TO MEET YOU ONE DAY CHERYL

This 1st episode has excited me, and has really opened my eyes.

I've seen the 'Apprentice' programmes. (Both Donald Trump and Alan Sugars versions, they get me fired up a bit and I enjoy the entertainment value). But I honestly feel THIS programme has taken the concept up a couple of levels at least. Especially in the professional presentation.

The only negative I would throw is the 'background noise' is overwhelming at times, leading to missing some of the vocals.

I hope that we in the other parts of the world (UK), are going to be able to keep up with the series in such a convenient manner as THIS.

May I wish you the very best,

Pete Moring.

Hi Mark,

How about Netshow?

I love the concept of this competition and I actually got butterflies in my stomach for the contestants! It makes me really wish I had applied! Especially when I learned you are one of the trainers! Just want you to know I recommend and teach your simpleology concepts to our Members and my coaching clients. Thank you! It's really making a difference.

Hi Mark,

The first episode of Internet Millionaire was "incredible" Comm is brilliant and Trump nor Burnett have nothing on him.

It was very cool seeing you vs. hearing you as I have in the past - I hope you will be appearing in more episodes because you are simply (:-) Genius!

I am one of Joel's affiliates and am spreading the word to my client list just as I am about Simpleology - by the way, I really like the Simpleology banner that is on the Internet Millionaire site.

Always the best,

Mark

I get all pumped inside because I can see myself up there!
This is awesome and inspiring.
What a great concept.
Mark this date and scan back a year from now to see what has been put into motion this day. I venture to say it will be phenominal.

Hi, everybody.

I tried to answer on the blog, but there are so many threads and all that I don't know if it got through.

I don't think NOShow is a convenient name because of the negative connotations of copping out or missing the boat. The name should be
attractive and also convey what the show is all about.

Perhaps the oxymoron "Virtual Reality" or Real Net or WinNet? In the Blog entry I also suggested NetShow, and I see that someone else here has thought of the same.

Posted by: Mary Martha Pazos at August 19, 2007 10:06 AM

In this special case, the show can be called a COMMercial ... Why find a new name for shows on the internet? Why reduce it to one medium? More and more TV shows are also broadcasted on the internet and who knows if not one day The Next Internet Millionaire can be watched on TV? Perhaps there won't be a difference anymore between TV and internet at all?

A live coaching call like we did during the last weeks at the 7DBT becomes immediately "virtual" when it's streamed a minute later.

What do all those famous internet marketers do? Write an ebook, record a seminar, transcript it and sell the script etc. Still the seminar is a seminar, no matter which way you present it (webinar, teleseminar).

Mark, you ask how I know when I am into something interesting. Maybe it's the language, but I think it's more important to feel the excitement when ideas rush in and "explode" and when you see lots of chances in something new which can solve problems of many people. Chances with a multi-leverage potential. The content matters.

By the by, something I wonder about regarding The Next Internet Millionaire. The official goal is to find a JV-partner for Joel Comm, right? And instead of building partnerships the participants have to compete? Strange world :-)

Personally I like ishows or eshows.

I think it flows well with the current catch phrases of the internet.

Just like we used to have mail

Now we have email.

Here's another one: cyber shows

I guess only time will tell what sticks...

Posted by: J. Jans at August 19, 2007 3:14 PM

hi mark,
I think 'real online show' will do well

Posted by: archita at August 19, 2007 10:18 PM

Hi Mark,

You asked for opinion so I'm going to give mine straight - no offense intended.

1) It is a 'better' kind of reality show but I personally think it's 'just' internet TV. I honestly don't see how this is specifically for internet only. It's just taking a TV concept and making it available online.

2) Though the show definitely has entertaining value, I came away with it feeling I had wasted an hour of valuable time. I've tried really hard to think of anything I learned which is valuable to my online endeavors, but it's just not there...

It would have been nice if in the judging rounds more attention had been paid to evaluation of the content and format the teams had come up with. Examples of what's good and what's not working.

I can see how this would 'devaluate' the entertainment level, but it would raise the learning value over 100% for entrepreneurs watching.

3) I was also wondering about who really gets to benefit from this show. Joel Comm of course with all of the attention he's getting - it's a smart marketing move. No doubt the contesters themselves will learn tons. Maybe you and the other sponsors gain from the exposure. But otherwise?

4) Like Melanie who posted above, I found it strange that there is so much focus on competition. Well, yes, there is a purpose of 1 person winning, but it collides with the overall purpose of becoming a JV partner. Do partners compete?

In addition I don't believe personally that internet marketing is about 'winning' the game of who gets rich the fastest. Something that is implied in the title.

Most of the IM millionaires around are people who became successful because they have a good team they work with. And many others struggle because of the lack of having a team.

I would be interested in seeing a spin-off that focuses on teams instead of individuals. A way that participants have a chance to bring their best to these teams and learn from how they put their skills together to come up with a great marketing concept that sells.

So, when are you going to start your own show for the MJ constructs? I would love to see that one!!

Patricia

Note from MJ: Hi Patricia. You're kind of missing the point ... why do we call podcasts "podcasts" and not "recordings on the Internet?" Because the medium is everything. Rather than putting a show on a mainstream media network with centralized control by the few, a NOShow decentralizes the power out to the people with lesser resources. The entry point for this kind of thing is getting lower and lower - with a NOShow it just got even lower. What if people started watching NOShows more than TV shows? What would that do to the media power structure? As for the content, I won't comment one way or another. That's not really the point. About the competition, though ... Personally I do think this kind of environment is harsh. I was not comfortable having to judge folks at the end of my episde. By no means can you know a person's merits in such a short time span. But this is a deliberate "game" and it has its merits for its purpose. Like it or not, the JV world *is* about competition. You are competing for the attention of promoters. They can't promote for everyone. Those willing to go out there and get it will succeed.

Posted by: Patricia Ritsema van Eck at August 20, 2007 12:38 AM

Thanks for enlightening me. Frankly I never got the podcasting concept either. When you make an interview available online - why do some people call it a podcast and others an audio/mp3 recording? And how does one differentiate? Beats me...

This stuff is probably just not my 'ding'.

I can go along with the competition aspect for about 90%. I see what you mean and agree. And simultaneously there is team, synergy and joined effort. The 2 are not mutually exclusive.

We had a TV show here in the NL a couple of years ago called 'The Challenge'. It wasn't about winning from fellow participants. It was about having a deadline to reach a goal as a team. Challenges like '2 days to create a playground in a backstreet neighborhood'. Great fun, emotionally engaging and also quite inspiring. Loved it. :-)

Mark,
When I first read "NOShow" I immediately thought of someone not showing up. Mark's a no show. Not until I read the comments and the original posting again did I realise what you meant. I like some of the above suggestion.

Posted by: Leona Seib at August 20, 2007 3:44 PM

Hi Mark,
I caught the show on the internet, loved it!!! I was wishing I was in the room with Joel Comm and yourself. Well after the episode I dug out my copy of "The Irresistible OFFER" and also decided to get started on Simpleology 101 again. I originally started Simpleology 101 in November 2005 when everything was put into your ring binder - grin!!! but slid off the tracks and am now pleased to say now that you have the wonderful new software and I'm off my BUT - I am gonna stick at this Simpleology. I know it will guide me to clarity and direction and I need both like YESTERDAY!

Bottom line I felt the show had good hype in the trailer and lead up to it and I thought it was great....However one gripe I had was it would have been good to have seen behind the scenes or "More Meat in the Pie" so to speak, could be a great spin off having the indepth steps on video podcasts going out as lessons, If the Audio had been clear enough could have even just got the audio track off it and run that as part of a webinar or whatever with downloadable MP3's. Loved it... My hand is up for the next one :o)

PS: "Brave Blog Volunteers" having just gotten back on board with Simpleology I would obviously love to participate in this, however I best pour over your blog and community - its been a while.

I am jealous!!!

Taking my favorites - Reality Television and IDirect Marketing - putting them together and making them exciting and fun to the rest of the world. Sign me up for next season.

WOW!!! And I didn't even want to watch this in the first place seing how long does it last. This is just great! Now I'm curious who that Internet Millionaier will be ... Hmmmm ... Definately it wouldn't be me. This is a bit too much for me...

Good luck to all.

I've always enjoyed the low tech vibe of the internet video and hoped that the co-opting of the mass mind control tactics of television is the exception, rather than the rule. Why can't the internet take the high road and not try to imitate the gross consumer celebration that all the 'boob tube, aka 'channel zero' engenders? The need for reality shows? That says a lot about disengagement. Why is there a country wide frenzy over dog fighting and a mass ambivalence about Abu Ghraib? Because the way the media spins it. Check propaganda genius Edward Bernaise if you doubt my words. It may just make you want to throw your television out the window and take up gardening and installing some greywater systems and photovoltaic panels for the impending apocolypse. Sorry ya'll, I just can't get on board with the internet trying to imitate the dull and uninspired world of TV.

Note from MJ: I wish you hadn't posted anonymously. I think I might like you :-) The content is immaterial. I'm right there with you about that - the point is that we can leverage this medium with a much cheaper entry-point. I'm quite familiar with Bernaise. With the net, we can distribute *that* information as well. Wake people up to the ways the media is used to manipulate. Stick around here and you'll see that issue addressed many times - and poke around the past posts as well.

Posted by: Anonymous at August 23, 2007 11:25 AM

@Anonymous:

You might want to check out www.zeitgeistmovie.com (if you haven't already seen it). One of the points made in here is that the media - which is for most part controlled by the same people that control politics, economics and war fare - are used to numb people through pointless entertainment so they simply stop caring about the real world. And thus don't get in the way of those 'in charge'...

It's vital that the internet doesn't go the same way as TV and that the users stay in control. So that when you, Mark and others put content online that actually is intended to make you think and question everything we take for granted and take action accordingly, it cannot be pulled off the net by those who wish us to stay asleep.

Hi Mark, et al,

Oh my ... maybe I'm getting too impatient, but the subject matter, delivery, jerky movements and bad voice quality were hard for me to get passed! :)

There was nothing there of benefit to me, except thinking of the far-reaching applications.

Maybe the folks on the show benefitted; but who else would? I wasn't inspired, educated or motivated by the subject matter. (I couldn't sit through it all, I'm afraid.)

It was like being trapped inside a seminar full of people, talking about the benefits of being Russian, when I don't even speak the language.

Even though I'm just a writer and not a "techie," I can totally appreciate the wondrous technical advancements that allow this kind of I-Presentation.

Or: Ishows, Inews, Imusic, Ilearning. Or: NetShow, NetNews, Net-a-rama (for a retro sound).

I can see how presenting information online, with real people talking about real issues, offering real solutions, directed to the right audience would be awesome.

Wow, think of the implications! Think of the good that could derive from it in every worthwhile venture. (Reminds of how distance learning has harnessed the Internet for education.)

In the spirit of free speech, however, the bad guys can use it, too. Propaganda, fostering dark ideologies and other not-so-good agendas will also avail themselves of this ... and I'm sure they already are.

I may be missing something, but I don't get how the specific subject matter is so exciting to so many?

Anyway, IMO the technology is good, but has a long way to go to ever, ever preempt T.V.

However, the technology, cost-efficency and de-centralized aspects DO open yet another door for freedom of expression ...

And that's always a good thing.

Thanks for listening,

Carolyn Permentier

Well, I'll shed my anonyminity and exercise my right to create new words ;-)
Totally agree with you; it's really about leveraging our imaginations and the ability to get together and communicate real solutions to real problems. We can do better than to expect to be taken care of by 'the government' (what is that?)-- we can take care of ourselves and each other. I'm so glad I learned about Bernaise (over the internet, by the way) because I'm not the only one watching and realizing that it's time to get real about the agenda of those who control the media. It's not a joke, we're really at a critical mass here with what's going on with our resources and our liberties. But as far as I can see, there's plenty of hope, and it's actually a blessing because it will eventually force us to get over the petty trivialities of color and creed and finally "just get along". We live on a miraculously beautiful planet, and there's so much fun we could be having, so much music and art we could be making. A few days ago my boyfriend told me about watching a spider for about half an hour wake up and go through a whole stretching routine. Apparently he's been watching insects stretch for years. Now we live in an age where we can share that with others, as obscure and far-out as it may be. Thanks, You-Tube. And FOX news, we don't mind if you're not interested in our insects stretching blog and video. We'll be okay without you.
I'll stick around this forum and do some poking around. Thanks.

Hi, Mark! Your simpleology is really awesome. That what I was looking for. I would like to propose you to localize it for Russian people. I am sure it will have great popularity. What do you think?

Posted by: Max at August 28, 2007 2:28 AM

Hey Mark, great show. Really enjoyed it :)

Was looking for you on facebook the other day.. couldn't find you. Are you on it?

Posted by: Paul Reilly at August 30, 2007 12:56 AM

Hello mark,

I think you have the charisma on stage. Love the way your eye brows work your thoughts. You do truly have a talent for capturing attention and manipulating it from a point of edification.

Your post above can be a little more simple considering "Simpleology", to comprehend as I found it quite vague and really not focused.

All-in-all I think your philosophy on Simpleology is simply ingenius.

Thank you for your valuable input.
